It's not going to happen. If Apple was still interested in offering a rack mountable system they would have redesigned the X-Serve instead of the Mac Pro.

Where is the logic in dropping a perfectly fine rack-mountable system, because apparently it wasn't sold enough, and then convert the Mac Pro workstation to... a rack-mountable system?! They could've dropped the Mac Pro and rebrand X-Serve to Mac Pro instead. Same result.

He makes a very good point. I do not understand why so many people want to make everything so small. I saw a post recently where a guy wanted Apple to drop the optical drive and use nothing but SSD in the iMac! Maybe I'm getting old and senile, but it makes no sense to me. And SSD's are still too expensive to be practical.

you have got to be CRAZY to think that he's going to intro an ipod at WWDC, when MW Paris is right around the corner! MW Paris in september is pretty much ALWAYS when they intro ipods and consumer products this time of year.
I am still a bit curious why the last iPod-updater had text strings such as: "t_feature_app_PHONE_APP, kPhoneSignalStrength,
    clPhoneCallModel,
    clPhoneCallHistoryModel,
    prPhoneSettingsMenu",
if an iPhone isn't around the corner. It doesn't make sense to include that unless the iPhone is very close to be released.
Besides, wouldn't it be beneficial, in terms of new apps, to let the developers know that the iPhone was about to be released very shortly?

I said it in the other thread : All for a download version of OS X Lion, but it should not be through the app store like the current DP. Checkout should provide you with a disc image that you burn to your own DVD/USB Thumb drive.

It's how Linux distributions have been doing it for the last 10 years.

Or if it really must be through the app store, provide a small disc image download that when booted off of, just provides an interface to sign-in to the App Store and install Lion, like RedHat was doing in 1996 with its "NetInstall" floppies that were just an installer than fetched its media over FTP or NFS.

i'll have no problem with it being in the App store, so long as disc backups will be allowed (and easy to accomplish).

Currently, 0% of app store products come with the option to make a physical backup. sure there's ways to do it, pretty easily in fact, but no apps are sold with this in mind because there's never been an app that'd need this feature before.

I personally wouldn't buy Lion from the App Store with the current store's setup, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else either.

I'm so sick of the tree hugging, let's all play nice and help everyone out attitude. How about the slackers get off their @$$ and do something for themselves.

Welcome to MacRumors! Home of the bleeding left. :D

Personally, I love how Apple is spanking everyone. Jobs is a visionary, and to argue differently is being ignorant.

Sad thing, there doesn't seem to be anyone else on the horizon to fill that void when he is gone. As Howard Stern or Robin mentioned on the air a couple of weeks ago, Steve is the Thomas Edison of our/my generation.

You think you've got it bad? In Britain we have
milk and beer by the pint
    coke by the litre
    roads by the mile
    tablecloths/fabric etc by the metre
    petrol/diesel by the litre
fuel efficiency is measured in miles per gallon but carbon emissions are measured in grams per kilometer.
weight of people in stones and pounds
    sugar/flour etc in kilograms
    fruit by the pound
    cheese by grams
bread loaves are labelled in grams, bread rolls sold by the dozen.
    height in feet and inches.

It is a mess here. I wish we would switch fully to metric. I think we are getting there, very slowly. For example, 15 years ago the weather used to always be in oC and then oF, now just oC is very common. Supermarkets sell fruit and veg with the per kg price much larger than per lb. The around the corner sells milk by the litre which is nice. More and more people are using metres and kilograms to measure their height and weight. Some things are more problematic, there are millions of pint glasses for beer and all our road signs would be a fortune to replace with kilometres!

The imperial system is crazy, but I think it will slowly but surely die out in the UK. Metric was pushed in about 40 years ago? Give it another 40 and I think we will be fully there!

Hopefully our American cousins will finally see sense and start talking in civilised speak soon.

What does "willing to be convinced" mean? Will you read Human Action by Mises? It's a thousand pages of thoroughly explained economics. You don't have to read the whole thing, just the sections pertaining to monetary policy and taxes... So you're really only doing yourself a disservice by passively waiting for someone with all the answers-

That's like saying that I need to read the whole Bible instead of you just telling me why you're a believer.

That's all we're asking. Just tell us why you believe something to be true.

If you inspire us enough, maybe we'll crack open that Bible.

this event is going to be simulcast in LONDON. Does this mean that movies will be able to be purchased by folks in the UK???

Nope, it's just that Apple Europe have big offices in London and it's easier to get the Euro journalists to fly to London to cover an Apple event than fly em to California - and more effective than just sending the press release.

The last few Jobsnotes/events have been shown in London to a select audience (although used to be out at the BBC) but it's no guarantee that we'll get the services that are being pushed.

I have used Sophos Endpoint Security Small Business Edition in various forms in small businesses since Fall 2005. There have been a few false positives early on, and a higher rate of requests to send samples of suspicious code to Sophos Labs, compared with Symantec's corporate software offerings.

The difference between the free home edition and the corporate Mac client seem to be the stripping away of remote management interface and the ability to receive local AV updates. The executables are almost exactly the same size.

For those who insist that Mac OS X needs not AV protection, I politely disagree. May I call you the Mary Mallon camp? Who was Mary Mallon? She was an Irish immigrant to the US at the turn of the last century. She was a cook. Today we know her as "Typhoid Mary". Approximately 30 people died as a direct result of the Typhus virus she carried, but was apparently immune to.

Martin Luther King said that "None of us are free unless all of us are free." Taken to a new context, computer security, "None of us are secure unless all of us are secure." Yes, Macs may be largely immune in today's threat environment." But threats change. But we all communicate with the Windows world. Please consider taking one for the team and getting some sort of AV. This is one excellent option. It runs on Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server just fine.

So which are you? Mary Mallon or Typhoid Mary? I am sure that it seemed very unfair to Mary Mallon that she should be quarantined when she showed no symptoms. Which is the greater good?

Incidentally, Sophos for the Mac is also an excellent tool for fighting viruses on Windows PCs and Servers. Using Snow Leopard's undocumented (and not ready for prime time) NTFS read/write mount capability (e.g. NTFSMounter) one can scan for viruses on an NTFS volume and remove them. (One cannot remove rootkits completely or scan the Windows registry. This is only a first step.) This can be a valuable first step in removing viruses and other malware from an infected PC or Server. (The next step is to scan from a virtual PC and dispose of that PC and replace with a fresh backup to guarantee no infection during the scan. Finally one uses tools on the running PC itself.)

That's not "Calendar" summer, it is based on cycles of the sun, precisely, the solstices and equinoxes. ;)

It just so happens that the Fall equinox falls in mid-september while Summer solstice is on the 21st of June.

This is true the world over, it is not a "US thing".

I understand. And while most "go by" what you are saying... IMO, meteorological summer really matters the most. On September 15th... most people don't really think of it as still being summer. What I'm saying is, subconsciously (or maybe not) we tend to think in meteorological seasons as opposed to calendar seasons, even though we technically more follow calendar seasons.

    That probably sounds confusing. Sorry.

No, but 1.8 is a big difference when it comes to taking a baby's temperature or figuring out if your meat is done just right. For a child, 99 is considered a mild fevor and is 37.22. 98.6 is considered "normal" and is 37 flat in C. However, if you had a mother trying to keep track of her child's fever over a period of time, the small variations between those two temps would be a lot more important. The total variation between 99, 99.5, and 100 F is so small on the C scale (37.22, 37.5, 37.77) that it's a lot easier to make mistakes in recording or reporting the results. Sure it's easy to do when it's your job in a professional setting, but lay people make mistakes all the time. Using a scale that makes the number differences larger (and psychologically significant, because you can bet no mother is going to forget that her child has a fever of 100) helps reduce those errors.
First of all, using two decimal places is not necessary for recording a baby's temperature, Fahrenheit or Celsius. 37.2 C is equivalent to 98.96 F, and 37.22 C is equal to 98.996 F. The hundredth's place is clearly superfluous. Therefore, your numbers reported to one decimal place in Celsius become (37.2, 37.5, 37.8), corresponding to 99, 99.5, 100.0 Fahrenheit. ...Plenty accurate for household thermometer readings.

I see no reason why 99, 99.5, and 100 are easier to track than 37.2, 37.5, and 37.7. As you said, we accept body temp to be 98.6 and 37.0 in Celsius. If decimals are difficult to remember, then clearly we should pick the scale that represents normal body temp as an integer, right? ;)

There are a lot of measuring cups and spoons that do come graduated these days (no, they're not in the "beyond" section of BBB), but it's not always possible to go by weight.

Weight also doesn't solve much because it would add an additional piece of equipment that isn't needed for a lot of recipes.
Perhaps your set of measuring cups is the additional piece of equipment. Indeed you wouldn't need them. For a recipe in SI, the only items you would need are an electronic balance, graduating measuring "cup," and a graduated cylinder. No series of cups or spoons required (although, they do of course come in metric for those so inclined).

It's also impractical to keep weighing out ingredients, especially if their net weight is going to be in the few grams. You also probably wouldn't save any dishes because flour is usually added into other wet ingredients like butter and sugar separately, so a second bowl would be used regardless.
It might seem that way to you, but the majority of the world uses weight to measure dry ingredients. For them it's just as easy.

Plus it's more intuitive and more accurate to measure dry goods by weight.

Other than that, any vessel marked "30ml" used for measuring would essentially be a tablespoon. A rose by any other name, really. Except that the 30ml rose is clunkier to say. In fact, you'd still need names for all of the common measures even using SI.
Why would you need alternative names? A recipe would call for "30ml" of any given liquid. There's no need to call it anything else.

Is everyone really going to go around calling a cup the "237ml vessel?"
Well, no one would ask for a 237ml vessel because that's an arbitrary number based on a different system of units. But if you wanted, yes, you could measure that amount in a graduated measuring cup (or weigh it on your balance).

Are people going to start calling it the "liter quartet of milk?" What would you do for the measures that have a secondary meaning? Will people still be able to call it a "pint" if it's sold as 500ml?
I suspect people would call it a "quarter liter," much like I would say "quarter gallon."

And no, you wouldn't call 500ml a "pint" because, well, why would you?

...But countries using SI do call 500ml a demi-liter ("demi" meaning "half").

There are some (albeit few these days). For daily tasks, the composite numbers in Imperial units are easy to halve and quarter.
This is the case with Si units as well. 500, 250, 125, 75, etc. Though SI units can also be divided by any number you wish. Want to make 1/5 of the recipe? ...Just divide all the numbers by five.

This has less relevance today with prepackaged food and digital equipment, but at one time it made practical sense for a lot more uses. The residual benefits are still present in home baking and similar activities where base 10 doesn't help, but those are the few things that still make heavy use of standard units anyhow. I don't think it's that onerous to know these days, especially with apps, Google, and conversion charts everywhere around us.
No, but it is onerous for kids to learn SI units, which is a mandatory skill in this global world. Like I said, why teach kids two units of measure if one will suffice?

I feel like im taking crazy pills...I think theres some confusion as to my feelings on the topic. Apple SHOULD include a discrete GPU in all of it's PRO Macbook line. Period. If you want a more exotic upgrade, fine. But to give a high end, expensive notebook integrated graphics is pure rubbish! Now, does Apple make more money by their status quo? Absolutely. Is is the right thing for the consumer? NO.

Lol, I didn't think that my statements would be very controversial, but apparently there are people here that do not quite have an eye for good design. Sorry.

Steve has spoken about Apple taking culture into their designs and products for many years. One example I listed is the beautiful new start menu in iMovie for iPad that is the marque of an old theater that even has the lights power up with authentic sound and visuals as the app opens to showcase your projects in a gallery of movie posters on the wall. Very creative and cultural!

    Wow, passive aggressive much?

Why on earth are you trying to pass off your idea off what 'good design' is on to others? Why are you criticising others for thinking that Amazon's design and UI is actually quite nice. If you want to be an Apple apparatchik, fine, but does insult me and others in the process.

And your last paragraph is ridiculous. Firstly, 'Steve'? Are you on first name terms with him? Laughable. Secondly, just because you think a faux-theatre veneer is 'cultural and creative' (hardly creative, something 4th graders have been doing for years...), it doesn't mean it ACTUALLY is. I mean let's get real, there's a nice polish on it and it looks pretty, but displaying movies as movie posters? Hardly a shocking revelation.

2012 could easily mean EARLY 2012. That would put the Verizon and AT&T phones on the same release schedule and also set a new precedent for revealing/releasing iPhones in the 1st quarter, WWDC focuses solely on software and operating systems, and the iPad being released in the 3rd/4th quarter (if the iPad 3 rumors pan out). And don't think for a minute that AT&T won't alter their upgrade eligibility dates to let people whose contracts expire this summer (without the release of a new iPhone) upgrade in 2012 for a subsidized price. They're doing everything they can to keep people from jumping ship.
